EarthPulse v. 5 Pro PEMF device - Full Review

Earthpulse command v.5Pro 3
The EarthPulse comes nicely packaged in a small carrying case with standard and European adapters for you travelers.  We’re always excited when a company offers to let us review a PEMF device, because we think this industry offers so many benefits and few risks.  There are many medical research studies around PEMF, but the informed consumer must learn to distinguish which products actually match the specs used in the various studies.  Many manufacturers simply provide general PEMF research, even if their product doesn’t provide any of the same intensities, wavelengths, or other parameters.

We’re especially interested in PEMF devices that offer a wider variety of settings, and that’s just what EarthPulse PEMF does.  We were sent the v. 5 Pro version of this device.   It has some great features, but also has some major drawbacks.

PROS:

Flexibility – we love any device that lets the user customize the experience.  A one-sized approach rarely works for the complex human genome, so allowing some tweaking of the pulse in PEMF is a major bonus.  EarthPulse not only has a few preset protocols, but It also lets the user dial in some customized settings.

Easy -  easy to use and setup.  The directions are not great, and the English translation is lacking, but the user interface is easy to navigate.

Results – While our funding doesn’t allow for objective laboratory measures, we did have favorable subjective results. Our users actually noticed a difference in how they slept and felt after using the EarthPulse for only a couple weeks.  This is probably the MOST IMPORTANT aspect to any product.  Who cares how long an item lasts, how fancy it looks, or how easy it is to use, if it doesn’t provide clinical results.

Price – We like that an entry level item can be purchased for a few Benjamins.  PEMF shouldn’t have to cost you tens of thousands of dollars, and this puts it within reach of most buyers.

CONS:

Blue Light - While the EarthPulse is primarily touted as helping with deep restorative sleep, it uses a bright BLUE light for the display screen.  This is arguably the worst light on the spectrum for helping calm the brain for sleep.  We’d like to see options to change this, or just make it a dull amber/orange/red screen.

earthpulseNo screen Timeout – To make the Blue Light issue even worse, the darned display stays on the entire time you’re using it.  That means you’ll wake up in the middle of the night thinking that a small UFO landed on the floor next to your bed, because a bright blue light is still lighting up your room.  Even when put under your bed, you can still see a fair amount of blue light coming out.  We hope the manufacturer will correct this with a 60-120 sec auto timeout for screen display.

Durability – The low cost is appealing, but if it doesn’t last, then the item actually ends up costing you a lot of money to replace.   We tested the output of our device, and after about 8 months of regular use, we were not getting a PEMF signal from the device.  This is despite the display working!  That means the average user might still think they were running a protocol, but in fact, no signal/pulse is being emitted from the device.  Our power adapter cord came slightly damaged too.   In addition, the buttons on the front of the device to control settings were quite finnicky.  They work most of the time, but sometimes the jump up two settings, while other times they don’t respond at all.

We hope that version 6 of this device improves these weak areas.  This device has a ton of potential, but until these major flaws are resolved, we can’t give it our full ChiroHub Seal.

Jeanie Rub by Core Products - Chiropractic Product Review

Patients love it, but don't expect it to last long

Patient Satisfaction: 9   Clinical Utility: 6.5    Durability: 4

jeanie rubWe've now put the variable speed Jeanie Rub massager through several years of testing.  While patients melt like butter underneath the bone jarring vibrations, we have gone through three of these puppies in about 4 years!

Patient Satisfaction: 9   If you want something that will increase patient satisfaction, while warming up soft tissues for an adjustment, then this is a great tool.  We had many patients ask where we got this machine, and how much it costs.  Several of them actually bought one for their spouse as a sneaky gift with a tacit plea.  Fortunately, the price tag is reasonable, so this is more of a consumer level piece of equipment.

Clinical Utility: 6.5  This does a nice job loosening up soft tissue, but don't expect it to really fix or cure any ailments.  It isn't targeted enough or strong enough to do deep tissue fascial release, fix tendinitis, or the like.  However, we think it's important to help the adjustments hold longer by relaxing the surrounding musculature, so for that reason, it is of moderate clinical utility.

Durability: 4  The manufacturer proudly displays a huge "Made in the USA" sticker on the top of the massager as if to say, "built to last, with only quality parts".  Our experience has been much different.  First, the paint on the handle chips away after a few months of use.  Then, after about a year, on all THREE of the devices we've purchased, the motor and switch start to act up.  By the end of 18-24 months they all die a slow and painful death.  The good news is that you know it's coming, because you will notice a steady deterioration in performance over the months prior to the final death.  Eventually, you turn the variable speed switch and nothing happens.  Our typical use of the device was 4 days per week, 3-5 times per day, 1-3 minutes each.  Again, this is a consumer level product, but not a clinical grade machine that will last you for years to come.

If you're OK with spending a couple hundred bucks every 1-2 years on this machine, then your patients will appreciate the massage it gives.  Just know that it's a semi-disposable product.  There was initially a two-speed version of this type of massager.  Maybe that one has better luck with maintaining connections.

Review of the Professional LxH Model by Dynamic Disc Designs

superior-3-quarters-with-labels
ChiroHub
is pleased to bring you a review on the Professional LxH model by Dynamic Disc Designs. In our mind, this unit changes the world of anatomical models. We were all exposed to a wide variety of quality in models during chiropractic school, but the detail and accuracy offered by this particular device is unparalleled. This model can serve as a great learning opportunity for both patients and practitioners. If you completed part 3 boards more than a year ago, there is a good chance you could use a review on the anatomy that you interact with and manipulate repeatedly on a daily basis. Nearly every spinal condition encountered in clinical practice can be explained and demonstrated in detail using this model by Dynamic Disc Designs.

Accuracy =10

We have never seen, and we have definitely looked, a more detailed and accurate model of the lumbar vertebrae and disc complex. These units are extremely well thought out, and represent the latest in our understanding of the anatomy of lumbar discs, facet joints, nerves, and vertebrae. The user can easily identify the cauda equina, dorsal root ganglia, nerve roots, nucleus pulposus, annular fissures, and more. During our two months of clinical testing with real patients, we never had an instance where we desired to showcase an anatomical structure and were unable to do so.

User Friendliness = 9

While anatomical models are pretty straightforward in the user-friendliness arena, we do want our users to understand the complexity of this particular model. It does require some care in keeping it clean, and ensuring the ongoing use of the gelatinous structure representing the disc herniation. The other lacking feature is a proper stand or mount. The model looks wonderful, but it would be nice to see a stand with photographic labels, as seen on some anatomical models.  Overall, these are minor qualms we have, as the unit is very clearly designed and easy to use when explaining structures to patients.

Value = 10

We believe this model is a no-brainer purchase. It is beautifully designed , accurate , user-friendly , and professional grade. The quality is impressive to patients, and the ability to demonstrate and describe flexion and extension loads on a disc herniation makes a huge impact on patient compliance.  Sure, you could go get a Mr. Thrifty skeleton for less, but you'll find yourself wishing you could actually show what happens to a patient's disc when they lift improperly.

Durability = 8.5

While we have only had the professional model for a couple months, we must say there are a few areas of concern for durability. The first is the delicacy of the actual disc herniation. This can be protected and maintained by proper use, but must be done so carefully. The second issue is the paint on the facet joints, which have already started to show a small sign of wear and chipping.  While this can mimic normal degenerative changes, it does affect appearance.  All other components of the model seem extremely well built and sturdy, so we truly believe this item will last many years in a clinical setting.

Bottom Line Score = 9.5
