Governor Rell: Health Care Professionals Can Benefit from Loan Repayment Program
  Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that doctors, nurses and dentists who agree to practice in the state’s underserved and rural areas may be eligible for repayment of their student loans.

Routine HIV Testing Program to begin in Three Connecticut Hospital Emergency Departments
  The Department of Public Health today announced a new pilot program to begin routine HIV testing in three hospital emergency departments. In an effort to identify and treat people who have been infected with HIV, emergency department patients will be offered free HIV testing while waiting to be evaluated or treated for other symptoms.

Pilot Program Providing Colonoscopies to the Underserved
  An estimated 600 uninsured or underinsured Connecticut residents will be screened for colorectal cancer over the next year as part of a pilot program in which the University of Connecticut Health Center is a primary partner.

Thanksgiving Day is Family Health History Day
  The Department of Public Health encourages Connecticut families to take a few minutes on Thursday, November 27th – Thanksgiving Day – to discuss their family health history. Thanksgiving Day was designated by the U.S. Surgeon General in 2004 as national Family History Day, dedicated to families increasing their knowledge of their own health history.

Department of Public Health Launches Diabetes Awareness Campaign Targeting African Americans in Three Major Cities
  The Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced an innovative campaign at to increase awareness among African American Connecticut residents about diabetes that features posters and take-away information cards to be posted at hair salons and barbershops throughout Bridgeport, Hartford, and New Haven. The announcement was made at It’s a Gee Thang Barber Salon, a barbershop and hair salon in Hartford.

Department of Public Health Encourages Smokers to Quit for a Day – Quit for Life During the Great American Smokeout
  The Department of Public Health is encouraging Connecticut smokers to join smokers from around the nation on November 20, 2008 by participating in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout. Smokers are encouraged to quit for at least one day, hoping that they will stay tobacco-free forever.
