Brief Statement on TAAOM Lawsuit Settlement

January 17, 2024

Austin, TX – The Texas Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (TAAOM) has chosen not to appeal the recent Austin district court decision upholding the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners' (Board) rule governing the practice of acupuncture by Texas chiropractors. The court’s judgement was rendered on October 3, 2023. In exchange for TAAOM’s waiver of their right to appeal, the Board and the state have waived TAAOM’s court costs in the litigation.

This settlement avoids further legal uncertainties and allows both parties to focus on their important roles in serving the Texas healthcare community. The Board will continue to fulfill its duty of regulating chiropractors in the state, which includes regulating the use of acupuncture by chiropractors within the chiropractic scope of practice.

Don’t Use These Terms In Your Advertising!

June 27, 2023

The Board has heard that a couple of you have received complaints from the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners for using the terms “physiotherapy” or “physiotherapist” and thus violating that board’s practice statute. That is correct! Under Occupations Code Chapter 453, using those terms amounts to someone holding himself out as a licensed physical therapist. So please check your advertising and other public communications to make sure you’re not inadvertently violating that law. If you have any questions about this, please call our General Counsel at 512-306-6715.

TBCE Congratulates Former Board Member Karen Campion on Election as President of FCLB

May 11, 2023

The Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners (TBCE) congratulates Dr. Karen Campion, a former member of the board, on her recent election as President of the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB). Dr. Campion, a Bryan, Texas chiropractor, was elected to this prestigious position at the 96th Annual Congress of the FCLB, held in West Palm Beach, Florida from April 26-30, 2023.

As President of the FCLB, Dr. Campion will be responsible for leading the organization in maintaining high, uniform standards related to chiropractic licensure, regulation, discipline, and education. Her previous experience as District IV regional director on the board of directors makes her an ideal candidate to take on this important role.

The FCLB serves as a central communication and service organization for chiropractic licensing boards throughout the United States and Canada. It is responsible for promoting patient protection, assisting member boards in setting standards for regulation, and credentialing chiropractic licensees.

Dr. Campion retired from full-time practice and currently practices part-time.

She was a member of the TBCE from 2011 to 2018 and served as Vice President from 2016 to 2018. We are proud of her accomplishments and look forward to her continued success in her new role as President of the FCLB.

The TBCE wishes Dr. Campion all the best in her new position and looks forward to continuing to work with her to promote high standards and patient protection in chiropractic practice.

The Tullio Award is named after Paul M. Tullio, a leader in chiropractic, whose contributions in testing, licensing, and legislative issues have benefitted the profession. The award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in the area of examination development, administration, analysis and/or scoring for the chiropractic profession. Nominations are made by any member of the NBCE Board of Directors and forwarded to the Executive Committee who then selects the recipient.

Dr. Mark Bronson is a chiropractor and owner of the Bronson Clinic, Inc. in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance and from Texas Chiropractic College with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Before his appointment to the TBCE, Dr. Bronson was involved in service to his profession through the Texas Chiropractic Association, where he twice served as President of his district and received a “Doctor of the Year” award, then as a State Director and Board Member, and as Coordinator for the organization’s Department of Scientific Affairs.

Since 1992, Dr. Bronson has served as a Designated Doctor for the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation, for determining the injury status of workers within the system. He also serves on the curriculum and test development committee as a Subject Matter Expert.

Since 1997, Dr. Bronson has served as Chief Examiner for the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and also on the committees for Parts III and IV test development.

On August 11th, 2016 Governor Greg Abbott appointed Dr. Bronson as President of the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners and has since reappointed him for a second term ending in 2027.

Reminder to All Licensees

June 21, 2021

As of September 1, 2020, all licensees are required to complete a Health and Human Services Commission-approved course in human trafficking awareness (see Texas Occupations Code Chapter 116) in order to renew a chiropractic license. The HHSC list of approved training courses can be found here. For a license renewal hold to be released, a licensee must submit a certificate of completion to licensing@tbce.texas.gov. DO NOT wait until the last minute to complete and submit the training certificate. Once a renewal hold is released, the new record will take up to two business days to engage with our online payment system. Licensees are responsible for all aspects of license renewal, up to and including late fees or fines.

Please note that the Human Trafficking course is a requirement for renewal but does not count towards a licensee’s continuing education requirements.
